What does it mean to Mitigate?

To lessen the harm or consequences of something. In contract law, for example, the law usually requires a nonbreaching party to affirmatively try to prevent further harm from occurring by entering into a new agreement with another party or to prevent unneccessary loss (i.e. find a new tenant in the event that the original tenant breaks a lease).
